Making the US safe for bicycles

For the last couple of days, the most emailed story in the New York Times website has been a story about bikes in Portland,

In Portland, Cultivating a Culture of Two Wheels

It is nice to see a US city look into the future a bit and see the need to back away from the automobile and toward the bike. Back to the future!
You can read the Times story at:

Unfortunately, the bike lanes in Portland make no sense whatever to me as a non-bike-rider and there have been an alarmingly high number of
bicycle vs. vehicle accidents. Many fatal. Our world seems to have no really good fit for bikes, which is one reason I have not been terribly motivated to overcome 50 years worth of no sense of balance to become one.
